Welcome to Cotswolds Riding

In the picturesque Cotswold village of Stanton, a few miles from Broadway, Jill Carenza (formerly Gabb) has been offering riding, and Bed & Breakfast in her 17th century Cotswold stone house, The Vine, since 1975. The riding includes lessons, as well as splendid hacks, for all levels of rider: with over 50 well-schooled horses, Jill has the right horse for you. There are also ponies for children.

There is plenty to do besides riding: The Cotswold Way footpath runs right past The Vine; golfing is available nearby; and Bath, Cheltenham, Chipping Campden, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon and Stow on the Wold are easily reached. The riding centre and Bed & Breakfast are open year-round. Each season in the Cotswolds brings its own pleasures.

We specialise in accelerated learning. Born in Gloucestershire, Jill Carenza began riding before she could walk, and rode to school at the age of five. She competed at advanced level but her first love has always been instructing.

Jill helps each rider achieve their personal goal - be it eventing, cross-country, or just hacking out confidently - in an accelerated fashion, with her unique blend of challenge and encouragement backed up by the selection of horses and training facilities. Most riders have been amazed at their rate of progress.

What a wonderful little B&B! I stayed here as part of a group while riding at the equestrian centre nearby and it was absolutely perfect. The room was comfortable, the lounge area is perfect for relaxing in after a hard day, they accommodated our timings for breakfast, the food was delicious, and the location is absolutely stunning (see photo for the view from our window). Couldn't fault anything.

This is a wonderful family B&B in the heart of a wonderful Cotswold village. The interior is full of local and family history and just charming! It is not a modern hotel, but facilities are more than good enough, there is a shower/bath in most rooms and they'll arrange the beds to suit, we book annually en mass and they cater for a big group and we can all have breakfast together at the same time before heading up to the stables. The breakfast is something else! I never learn and often eat far too much to go straight into a lesson afterwards, maybe one time I will remember but it's so hard to say no! Jill genuinely cares about her guests and will sort anything out if you have an issue just talk to her, she's really accommodating and always remembers us and asks us if we've had a good stay.

The good: The exterior of the house is beautiful, the village is gorgeous and there are some interesting antiques in the communal areas. The village pub is reasonable with good views. The rest: I was prepared before arrival that despite the cost of almost £100 a night, this was going to be a fairly rustic experience based on reviews. We chose to stay here because of affiliation and proximity to the riding school. I wasn’t prepared for sleepless nights caused by the owner’s grandchildren running around shouting until 01:00, the house phone ringing and the family shouting about it after 00:00, or people having excessively loud conversations about cups of tea outside our bedroom door before 05:00. If you stay in a b&b you accept that you are staying in someone’s house and don’t expect a ‘hotel’ experience. But I expect to be treated as a paying guest - especially for £100 in a room desperately in need of a thorough dusting and updating. The grandchildren used the guest bathroom instead of the family one and did not flush or wipe up after themselves. I don’t want to come on holiday and wipe up other people’s children’s wee. The breakfast was at best edible, with undercooked eggs and extremely salty mushrooms, but there was plenty of choice for a small b&b. We didn’t get any acknowledgement or apology for the disturbance to our sleep. The owner was absent when we were paying the bill and it didn’t seem fair to raise our issues with the member of staff who is employed to cook breakfast and housekeep. I wouldn’t come back and definitely not at the current rates for the experience.

I have stayed at the B&B many times over the years whilst riding at the Equestrian Centre, most recently August 2021. The B&B is a lovely old Cotswold house with plenty of charm and a warm welcome. Breakfast is always amazing and massive!

We booked to stay at the B&B purely because we were utilising the riding facilities at the equestrian centre but I wish I had booked elsewhere. The B&B is in an old, beautiful Cotswold home but the exterior is where the beauty ends. It needs updating massively, the towels are threadbare, the curtains barely work and fully cover the windows and doesn't take into account basic guest needs like hooks to hang towels or a functioning wardrobe. We stayed for 2 nights, the first night was uneventful albeit if anyone went in the room above us it was like a herd of elephants wearing hobnailed boots doing gymnastics so I woke up a few times. But our second night was a disaster as the owner had a large group of her family stay who kept us up until 1am, children running around shouting, stomping up and down stairs and adults shouting and swearing when the kids weren't going to sleep!!! So unprofessional when you have people paying almost £100 a night. Honestly, find somewhere nicer, they need a reality check if they want to charge people that much!
