Welcome to Monteviot House Gardens. These, extending to some thirty acres, surround the House itself, spilling down over lawn and through woodland onto the flood plain of the river Teviot below. The overall Garden comprises a series of differing gardens, designed to provide the visitor with planting interest from April until October. Monteviot being situated in the depths of the Borders offers great opportunities for various activities. It is at the centre of a series of recognised walks both long and short, including Dere Street, St Cuthbert’s Way and marked walks to the Waterloo Monument on Penielheugh behind and above the House.

Unfortunately I did not get to see the gardens. On arrival I was possibly the only visitor as the carpark was empty. However I did make my way to the entrance. There was nobody at the desk, but a large bell to ring for attention. I did this and waited several minutes before taking myself in and shouting a few times. Nobody came. After about 15 minutes I left. I'm sure the gardens are beautiful but if it states they are open then somebody should be available.

House was shut but the gardens were wonderful. More natural than formal beds but wildlife is plentiful
