As I write this, we are just getting over the hottest day and night Britain has known since records began.

Sleep was difficult for several days leaving one feeling cranky and out of sorts. Sleep deprivation plays havoc with your sense of perspective so that little things become big things. During the day, the heat saps you of your energy and you hardly want to eat anything.

Then there were the dogs going round the house with tongues hanging out panting for water. A trip to one of the numerous water bowls dotted about the house soon put them right.

Now, apply the picture I have been painting to the soul. Your energy and perspective have gone. The food of the Word is too much and you can't find a place to drink a draught of Living Water. This is exactly how David felt at the beginning of the Psalm. He is depressed, depleted and alone. His recovery comes as he realises how thirsty he is. He remembers past blessings and gives himself a good talking to.

In the Gospel, Jesus comes up with the solution to all Spiritual thirst, He Himself is the well of Living Water of the Holy Spirit. All we need to do is drink.  This promise holds today if we believe and receive the free gift of Living Water.

I was also struck last week by the fact that many countries live with these high temperatures all the time without much rain. Crops fail, people starve and food is sold to the West with little money going to the farmers who actually grew the stuff.

During our harvest celebrations on 25 September, we will be giving thanks for God's provision for us and praying for a fairer world.

Whatever the weather holds for the rest of the summer, may you all have an enjoyable and blessed time.
